Baby Matteo was born at Mater Dei Hospital, Malta, on 18th December 2021, a beautiful and courageous baby diagnosed with Trisomy 21. From the moment he arrived, Matteo showed the resilience and bravery that would inspire everyone around him.
During his short life, he faced a large atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD) and required open-heart surgery. His parents and the medical team supported him with unwavering love and care throughout this journey. Despite the best efforts and his remarkable strength, Matteo passed away on 2nd March 2022 at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London due to complications following his surgery.
Though his time with us was brief, Matteo's impact was profound. He taught his family, friends, and the wider community the importance of love, compassion, and cherishing every precious moment. His story continues to resonate through the work of the Baby Matteo Foundation, helping families in Malta and beyond find comfort, support, and remembrance during their own journeys of loss.
Matteo's legacy lives on in the initiatives of the Foundation, including the Memory Box program at Mater Dei Hospital, which allows parents to honor and remember their babies with dignity and love. Every action taken in his memory ensures that his spirit continues to inspire hope, compassion, and healing for families facing similar challenges.
The Baby Matteo Foundation exists to provide comfort, care, and dignity to families who experience the unimaginable loss of a child. We raise awareness about pregnancy and infant loss, support bereaved parents, and work to improve hospital environments in Malta and Gozo. Through compassion and solidarity, we ensure that no family walks this journey alone.

Throughout the year, the Baby Matteo Foundation organizes various fundraising events and community initiatives. These include charity walks, bake sales, and visits to the NPICU at Mater Dei Hospital. We also deliver gifts and handmade crafts to parents and babies during Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day — spreading love and remembrance across our community.
Every donation helps us continue our work in memory of Baby Matteo and all little angels gone too soon. Your contribution supports families, improves hospital facilities, and helps us spread comfort and hope where it’s needed most.
